Prevention & Treatment of Baby Positional Plagiocephaly

Flat Mattress vs. SleepCurve Mattress

In this short video, Philip Owen talks about the advice given by the Lullaby Trust and Midwives in using a firm, flat mattress for your baby, but also as a result, the increase in incidents of Flat Head Syndrome and how this can both be prevented and treated using a SleepCurve Baby Mattress.

What is Flat Head Syndrome?

Flat Head Syndrome (also known as Positional Plagiocephaly) is seen in babies and children caused by lying a baby on a flat mattress when the bones are still soft enough to deform. It is currently thought that the bones are soft enough to deform before the age of 12 months.

What causes Flat Head Syndrome in Babies?

Flat Head Syndrome is caused by a baby having a preferred side to which to rotate. After a period of time, with the weight of the baby’s head being consistently on one spot, the head starts to flatten thereby distorting the shape of the head.

Has YOUR Baby got Flat Head Syndrome?

Flat Head Syndrome looks like the baby has a mis-shaped head. There are plenty of photos to demonstrate a typical flat head in a baby, but the easiest way to look at the shape of a baby’s head is to look at it from above and observe the symmetry.

Watch the short video below by Philip Owen to help you identify if your baby has Flat Head Syndrome.

What lasting effects will Flat Head Syndrome have when children have grown up?

At least 2 pieces of published research suggest that children with positional plagiocephaly (Flat Head Syndrome) do not do as well at school, both in the classroom as well as in the playground.

How is Flat Head Syndrome treated?

The key to treatment of Flat Head Syndrome is to catch it early enough for self correction to take place. In order for this self correction to take place you must take away the cause, namely the flat mattress, bouncy chair or prolonged use of a car seat. By using a SleepCurve mattress this will take off the pressure from a baby’s skull bones and start to allow the self-correction process to take place.

Additionally there are corrective helmets that can be fitted to babies which have the same effect of taking the pressure off the baby’s head, however these can be costly and often babies have to wear them for up to 23 hours per day.

Using a SleepCurve Mattress to treat and prevent Flat Head Syndrome

A SleepCurve Baby Mattress is a very low-cost solution for the prevention as well as intervention for mis-shapen heads or flat head syndrome, compared to the more-costly, uncomfortable and obtrusive corrective helmets.

As the pressure mapping studies show (see below) there is reduced pressure on the surface of a baby’s skull when using a SleepCurve mattress.

This is because the mattress conforms, more or less, to the shape of the skull thereby distributing the weight evenly across more of the surface.

Further research carried out at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool has found that babies with misshapen heads will tend to automatically self-correct when put on to a SleepCurve mattress.

Conclusions from a recent clinical study:

  • 29 out of 30 patients using SleepCurve mattress showed an improvement in head asymmetry.
  • The average Cranial Vault Asymmetry fell from 16.5mm pre-study to 5.5mm post study.
  • The improvements were equivalent to results reported for corrective helmets.
  • SleepCurve mattresses are a low-cost but effective treatment for deformational plagiocephaly.
