TEN Facts to Clarify and Reassure Parents who may be considering using a SleepCurve Mattress
We have had a number of ‘Keyboard Warriors’ in the past, particularly on social media. The SleepCurve Company respects people’s opinions, but some of the comments that have made are misguided, factually incorrect and are misleading for other parents. The comments come from people with a clear limited understanding of Flat Head Syndrome, SIDS or any clinical knowledge or experience.
So, this brief article will highlight some of the REAL FACTS, which might help reassure parents who may be confused by conflicting opinions, both in the mainstream and also on Social Media.
Although there have been many studies and suggested causes, the actual cause of SIDS is still UNKNOWN.
Since the introduction of the Back To Sleep Campaign in 1991, there has been a dramatic reduction in the number of unexplained infant deaths, from around 2,000/year to currently around 220/year.
The SleepCurve Company fully supports the Lullaby Trust in its work to reduce the incidence of SIDS and in its promotion of Safer Sleep Advice.
The unexpected side-effect of the Back To Sleep Campaign has meant a significant increase in the number of babies developing Plagiocephaly, also known as Flat Head Syndrome.
By placing a baby on a firm, flat, mattress, with the combined effect of the weight of the head, soft skull bones and gravity, a flattening of the baby’s head can occur.
At least 2 pieces of published research suggest that children with Flat Head Syndrome do not do as well at school, both in the classroom as well as in the playground.
The SleepCurve Mattress range of products are just as effective in treating flat head syndrome, as the much more expensive, uncomfortable and obtrusive orthotic helmets.
The SleepCurve mattress has been CLINICALLY TRIALLED & PROVEN to both PREVENT and TREAT Flat Head Syndrome, at Alder Hey Children’s hospital. The mattress was invented by a leading UK Paediatric Cranial Osteopath (Philip Owen), dedicated to child wellbeing and the prevention of Flat Head Syndrome.
There is NO EVIDENCE that suggests a baby is any less safe on a SleepCurve Mattress, than on any other firm, flat mattress. In fact, the statistics would show the opposite.
In over 20,000 SleepCurve mattresses sold, there has NEVER been a reported incidence of SIDS.
We believe the Facts Speak for Themselves.
In addition, the SleepCurve range of mattresses also facilitate a baby’s airways to be more patent (open). This may or may not have anything to do with the ZERO incidents of SIDS.
The SleepCurve Company has attempted to contact and start a dialogue with Jenny Ward, the Chief Executive of the Lullaby Trust, in relation to the advice given and the impact on the increase in Flat Head Syndrome.
We believe the advice should be examined again and updated, in the interest of further improving child safety and reducing the incidents of SIDS.
